Moving to Chengdu to study Chinese is an exciting experience, but accommodation is often one of the first practical questions students need to solve.

This guide explains the main accommodation options available for international students in Chengdu and gives realistic price ranges to help you plan your budget.
The average monthly accommodation budget for a Chinese language student in Chengdu is usually between ¥2,500 and ¥5,000 per month (€300–€650 approximately). The main options are:
Home Stay
Many language schools offer homestay options, allowing students to live with a local family and experience daily Chinese life. It is a great choice for cultural immersion and practicing Mandarin outside the classroom. It is also the option that requires the less organisation as it can be fully organise before arrival. However, it may not be the best fit if you enjoy nightlife, often come home late, or prefer complete independence.

Serviced appartment
Serviced apartments are a flexible option for students staying a few months. Usually larger than studios, they are located in residences where you may live alongside Chinese students and locals. Most can be rented monthly and include washing machine and kitchenette. Some are modern and comfortable, while others may feel basic or poorly furnished. A quick ‘IKEA’ trip may be needed to make the space feel like home as services are not always consistent.

Hotel
Hotels are a convenient for short stays, offering flexibility, regular cleaning, and sometimes facilities such as a gym or laundry. However, they are less practical for longer stays due to limited space, facilities, and some may not include a fridge. They can offer good value for stays up to 30 days and are a great choice when first arriving in Chengdu, giving you time to explore before choosing a longer-term option.

Studio
A great option for longer stays which often offers the best value for money. Some schools help long-term students find the right apartment by putting you in touch with agents and reviewing contract. Be prepared to explore the city (probably at the back of a scooter) with a real estate agent for visits. For stays over 3 months, renting your own place can offer both comfort and savings.
